UGX. 5 million has been contributed by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to the Hoima Catholic Diocese’s fundraising campaign, which aims to raise funds for the construction of a community center and a specialized hospital for women and children.
The gift was formally announced when Rt. Rev. Vincent Kirabo Amooti, the Bishop of the Hoima Diocese, visited the UEDCL Head Office in Nakasero.
Bishop Amooti gave a speech to the 60 UEDCL employees who had come to greet him, thanking them for their support and outlining the significance of the project. “There are no such hospitals in the whole Bunyoro region. It is therefore desperately needed there. Since the pillars are now in place, we have already gotten ahead of schedule, and we eagerly await their completion so that we may start helping our people,” he stated.
Bishop Amooti also thanked them for serving the country in their capacity as staff of the national electricity distributor.
The UGX. 5 million donation to Hoima Catholic Diocese’s fundraising efforts is part of UEDCL’s broader commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Additionally, the fact that the majority of UEDCL’s management team, including Managing Director Paul Mwesigwa, attended the event shows how seriously the organization’s leadership takes corporate social responsibility. Chief Finance Officer Jacqueline Kiwanuka, Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs Jonan Kiiza, Chief Commercial and Operations Officer Eng. Joselynne Rwabwogo, Chief Logistics and Production Officer Moses Awateh, and Head of the Procurement and Disposal Unit Innocent Byamukama were among the other members of the Management Team present. The Bishop’s visit was organized by Boniface Barongo, Head of Human Resources and Administration.
This unequivocal dedication to CSR stems from UEDCL’s belief that, in addition to distributing power, it has an obligation to significantly advance the socioeconomic well-being of the communities it serves.
Other recent CSR initiatives by UEDCL include:
• Providing intentional economic empowerment activities to the local communities in Kyampisi and Walumwanyi.
• Moroto Regional Referral Hospital had a cleaning and sanitation project that improved the hygienic conditions of one of the most significant medical facilities in the area.
• Taking part in community events organized by the church, such as actively attending a youth camp in Karamoja that offered a forum for community development, spiritual advancement, and youth empowerment.
Beyond only providing power, UEDCL’s larger goal is to function as a good corporate citizen by generating shared value, which is reflected in all of these initiatives.
In all of its operating territories, UEDCL seeks to promote inclusive development and improve community relations by collaborating with local governments, faith-based organizations, and communities.
It just so happens that Bishop Amooti’s visit coincides with a pivotal point in UEDCL’s history in Hoima. Hydromax Ltd., an independent power producer, relinquished its energy distribution operations in Hoima District to UEDCL only last month.
With this transfer, UEDCL formally took over the task of providing electricity to the 357 consumers in the area. The Kabalega Industrial Park now supplies the grid with 9–10 megawatts and 7 load centers.
This change came after the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) formally amended Hydromax’s license, giving UEDCL complete distribution rights and obligations in the area.
Prior to assuming Hydromax’s operations, UEDCL had previously acquired power concessions from Umeme (2025), Kyegegwa Rural Energy Cooperative Society Limited (2024), Ferdisult Engineering Limited (2017), Bundibugyo Energy Cooperative Society Limited (2021), Pader Abim Community Multipurpose Energy Cooperative Society (2023), and Kilembe Investments Limited (2024).
