Board Chairman's Message
On behalf of the Board members I welcome you to the official UEDCL website.
It is over ten years since Uganda Electricity Distribution Company’s main mandate changed from a predominantly national electricity distributor to that of an asset manager guided by the Lease and Assignment Agreement (LAA) to ensure that the distribution concession is well administered.
The 20 year long term concession through which the power distribution and supply operations of UEDCL were privatized after a resolution by the Government of Uganda, was meant to bring on board private investors in the electricity distribution and supply business in order to attract Foreign Direct Investment, improve the quality of service, rehabilitate, upgrade and expand the distribution network; and increase the electricity access to other customers in the country.
The key mandate of the company remains Monitoring the Umeme electricity distribution concession and ensuring compliance with the lease and assignment agreement.
In addition, under the operations and maintenance agreement with Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Company is and has been involved in distribution and supply of power in 27 districts in the Northern, Eastern, mid central and southern parts of Uganda. The quality of service to our customers in those areas continues to improve and more people continue benefiting from the added rural electrification assets.
On UEDCL’s obligations to upgrade and expand the distribution network, the company is successfully accomplishing the drive of implementing urgent rural electrification schemes and some foreign funded projects as required by the GOU.
The Pole Plant at Lugogo in Kampala maintains its transformation drive from a support unit to a fully-fledged and commercially viable business unit trading in creosote treated wood poles. The improvements at the pole plant are continuous with a view of attaining international standards and meeting all the environmental requirements. Large volumes poles are being treated annually and sold to both the local and regional markets. This is an on-going great achievement of breaking into new markets in Rwanda and Tanzania.
Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited as a responsible corporate citizen is maintaining the eucalyptus forest at Walumanyi that has now reached harvesting stage.
I want to express my appreciation to our treasured Shareholders, my fellow Board Members, Management and Staff of UEDCL for their dedication and commitment that enables the company to operate successfully in all our business endeavors.
Chairman, Board of Directors
